County Counciilors Call
For More Pay |
After
fighting the County Council elections in May on a promise to
cut Council Tax the Conservatives on Staffordshire County Council
have called for more money to be paid to their members. This
request was made when the Council voted to increase everyone's
pay even though the Council's independent pay review body had
recommended that no changes should take place. The Conservatives
argued that despite the pay rises their shadow cabinet members
deserved even more money because they worked hard. So much for
saving Council Taxpayers money! |
More Job Cuts
At RAF Stafford |
Once again Stafford
is reeling from the news that more jobs are to go at RAF Stafford.
The shock announcement was made in Parliament by Defence Minister
Don Touhig, who said that the storage and distribution operation,
run by the Defence Storage and Distribution Agency, would close
before 2008. This could mean hundreds of jobs going from the
site.
Barry Stamp, who was in the party
of senior Borough Councillors who meet Adam Ingram - Minister
for Defence - last year said he was not surprised at the news.
"It was clear from all the meetings I attended last year
that other elements within the RAF were just waiting for the
review of Strike Command before making their own plans for the
future. When Strike Command decided, at the turn of the year,
to move their part of the base to RAF Whittering I think deep
down many people realised that other units would also probably
follow suit. What really worries me is that this announcement
was made in Parliament on the day before the summer recess began
and just a few weeks after the General Election was held. I'm
sure the Government is hoping that by the time Parliament returns
in October the unrest this announcement has caused will have
subsided," said Barry Stamp |
