It
now looks as if the old Eagle Pub on the Newport Road is under
attack. The pub, which is a Grade II listed building, has been
boarded up for some time. It now appear the owners of the site
- St Modwen Properties - want to transfer it to Focus Housing
as part of a land package, which will then be used as the site
for Stafford's new homeless hostel. At a recent meeting with
a senior officer at the Borough Council, Barry Stamp was disappointed
to learn that it is planned to seek permission to demolish the
pub so a larger hostel can be built.
"While I'm certainly not
against a new hostel for the homeless being built on this site
I am against the Eagle Pub being pulled down to make extra space.
The pub was built in the early 1800's and has been a landmark
in the town ever since. Stafford has already lost many of its
old buildings. By linking the demolition of the pub to the development
of the new homeless hostel is wrong, and can best be described
as moral blackmail. I believe it would be possible to incorporate
this building into the new hostel complex. Everything should
be done to ensure it is restored for future generations,"
said Barry Stamp.
